Maj. Gen. Scott F. Smith, Director of Training and Readiness, Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, announced the recipients of the 2016 Air Force Readiness Thru Live, Virtual, Constructive (LVC) / Modeling and Simulation (M&S) Awards. This annual Air Force (AF) award program recognizes the contributions of Air Force M&S personnel in direct support of the warfighter. Entries were judged in four functional award categories - Acquisition, Cross-Functional, Test and Evaluation/Experimentation and Training.

  • The M&S Acquisition Award went to the AFLCMC Simulators Program Office MAF DMO Team, Wright Patterson AFB, OH. With MAF DMO, multiple aircrews are able to train in a networked environment, enabling them to maintain proficiency in a timely and cost effective manner. The team has also successfully demonstrated the ability to connect multiple dissimilar simulators and networks, establishing the groundwork for increasingly complex future training events.
  • This year's winner in the AF M&S Cross-Functional Award category is the 37th Flying Training Squadron Innovation Team, Columbus AFB, MS. The 37th Flight Training Squadron Innovation Team developed and implemented the first use of Virtual Reality to improve Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training. This technology, combined with high-definition live footage simulates training missions providing a high dollar simulator experience utilizing a $1K device.
  • AFOTEC, Det 6 Nellis AFB F-22 Test Team won the M&S Test and Evaluation Award. The team’s relentless efforts in the field of operability testing has resulted in tremendous advances. The revamping of the F-22 M&S accreditation and validation testing ensured a $1.67B program upgrade, as well as being handpicked to test a $400M simulated EW system, which blazed the path for F-22 tests vs the latest threats. In addition, they updated M&S operational testing requirements, saving the DOD $3M.
  • The Medium Altitude Long Endurance Tactical Joint Tech Center Systems Integration Laboratory Aircrew Trainer (M-JAT) Team is the 2016 M&S Training awards winner. The MQ-9 Special Projects MJAT Team delivered a networked, deployable, Multi-Level Security Reaper Unmanned Aircraft System aircrew trainer for Air Force Special Operations Command. They fielded two trainer software releases thirty days ahead of actual aircraft software resulting in early certification of over 200 aircrew. They were the first ever MQ-9 trainer in Exercises VIRTUAL FLAG and COALITION VIRTUAL FLAG, completing 2,000+ currency events for 70 United States and coalition partners.
AFAMS congratulates the winners.
